Hear Scarlatti with New Ears
![]() Born in 1685 and growing up in Rome, Scarlatti heard the bagpipe music played by shepherds at Christmas, and memories of this produced sonata K.513, with its touching pastorale. Moving to Spain in 1719, he arrived in Seville during the Holy Week processions: this inspired K.490, with its obsessive drum beat, followed by K.491 as the city danced the Seguidilla Sevillanas. Jane Clark had the rare experience of playing for a Spanish Folk Dance Group before she met Scarlatti, so was stunned to meet exactly the same music in some of his sonatas. On this CD she demonstrates the wide emotional range shown by the composer under the different influences he encountered. |
